
The bass player Kalli Gerhards, born 1955 in Germany, played after school in different Beat- and Rock bands. “Jimi Hendrix was our hero at this time”. In the 70ties, he went to the Jazz school Munich, where he studied with Adelhard Roidinger and Hans Rettenbacher. First engagements with Roman Schwaller followed.
One of the first possibilities to study Jazz and Rock in Germany came
from Hamburg. So, Kalli went North. People like Herb Geller, Albert
Mangelsdorff and Inga Rumpf showed the young Musician, how to get
professional.
After that, Kalli studied at the “Hochschule für darstellende Kunst und Musik”. “During my studies I could develope my classical technique”. He got a diploma for teaching Music. “Today it helps the freelancer to get some bread, when other work is rare!”
In Hamburg he worked for the “Cats” Ensemble, at the “Hamburger Staatsoper” and at the “Norddeutscher Rundfunk”. At that time he met his wife during a tour through Switzerland. 1990 he went to live in Zuerich.
Concerts and Tours with: European Jazz Giants, Benny Bailey, Buddy Tate, Oscar Klein, Thomas Moeckel, Gene Connors, Horace Parlan, Buddy deFranco, Marion Brown, Joe Pass, Al Grey, Oliver Jackson, Jay McShann, Charly Antolini, Glenn Ferris, Plas Johnson, John Faddis, Karl Ratzer, Herb Geller... Since 1983 he has often worked with Torsten Zwingenberger.
LP-, CD-, Broadcast and TV -Recordings.
1987 “Deutscher Schallplattenpreis” for Live Recording with Harry Sweets Edison.
He works as Music-teacher, both, private and at the ACM, Zuerich
(Doublebass, Electrobass).
His heroes are Oscar Pettiford, Sam Jones, Ray Brown ... but he also is familiar with musicans like Jaco Pastorius and Marcus Miller.
